What It’s Like In Marriage Counseling As a Marriage Counselor

IMG_2495 (2)What It’s Like In Marriage Counseling As a Marriage Counselor.  No marriage is immune from relationship problems.  I’ve been a Marriage and Couples Counselor for over 20 years.  I have been married for seventeen years.  In all my years as a relationship expert I believed in utilizing and implementing the tools that make for effective communication.  I teach the couples I work with how to talk to one another without becoming abusive towards one another and how to ask for what they need and want.  Recently my husband and I needed to consult with a Marriage Counselor as we had some issues that needed help being resolved.  Sitting in the clients chair when I typically sit in the Therapist’s chair was a little uncomfortable as I received a different perspective.  I was a bit nervous and apprehensive in sharing our problems and what brought us into counseling that day.  I had a sense of empathy for the client as it is very difficult to share thoughts and feelings about something so personal as marital issues.  It is very important that the Marriage Counselor is proficient and understands what is needed with each couple as each couple is unique with different sets of circumstances.

In listening to my husband share his concerns I become a little defensive as I believe my point of view was just as important and justifiable as his.   I found myself just as argumentative as some of the clients I see in my practice.  What I realized was we are all vulnerable to the process of sharing our feelings about what we want from our partner and the relationship.  To ask for what we want and need is not an easy thing to do.  It’s important to procure the right Therapist for you and your partner as not every Therapist is the same.  I utilize different techniques and implement various tools to help with the moving forward process.

I put up this photo I took of a waterfall in Kauai as it depicts the feeling I felt of free falling while in that initial couples counseling session; scary, free, warm and cold at the same time, and refreshing as the time spent was helpful in that processing thoughts and feelings with a trained clinician can help you get the clarity you need.

For those of you who have never been in Marriage Counseling it may appear scary at first, but counseling with me is made to feel all of the above and worth the effort made to come.  Please call me at (858) 735-1139 for more information about the process.
