How I Manage My Cassandra Symptoms

How I Manage My Cassandra Symptoms
By Sarah Cook Ruggera, LMFT, Certified Neurodiverse Couples Counselor

Living with Cassandra Syndrome — the emotional fallout from being in a neurodiverse relationship where my emotional needs often felt overlooked — has been one of the hardest challenges of my life. It crept in quietly: the loneliness, the confusion, the sense that I was invisible in my own marriage. But over time, I found ways to manage the symptoms and reclaim my sense of self.

How I Manage My Cassandra Symptoms

The first and most powerful step was naming the experience. Once I understood what Cassandra Syndrome was, I stopped blaming myself for feeling so disconnected and unheard. Validation was everything.

I became a certified neurodiverse couples counselor because traditional marriage counseling was ineffective and sometimes even damaging. Counseling and coaching is vital. Through my own healing and professional training, I understand how important it is to separate your identity from the chaos you may feel. Boundaries, self-worth, and healthy communication are essential tools that protect emotional well-being.

Through neurodivergent-affirming coaching and counseling, I’ve embraced a strength-based perspective that honors who we both are, instead of trying to “fix” either one of us. I now focus on what works, not just what hurts.

Support groups — both in-person and online — have given me the community I desperately needed. Knowing I wasn’t alone changed everything. It gave me perspective, encouragement, and even laughter on hard days.

Self-care is no longer optional. I prioritize things that bring me joy: solo travel, hobbies, and deep friendships. These things refill my emotional tank and remind me that I matter, even when my partner struggles to show it.

Cassandra Syndrome doesn’t disappear overnight, but it can be managed — with honesty, boundaries, and a fierce commitment to your own emotional well-being.

If you’re struggling in a neurodiverse relationship, you are not alone.
