When Love Feels Lonely – The Book

When Love Feels Lonely

The Cassandra Wife: Clarity and Connection in a Neurodiverse Marriage

Have you ever felt lonely sitting beside the person you love?

You may love your husband deeply and still feel emotionally alone.

You may wonder why conversations so often end in frustration, why your needs seem difficult to explain, or why you have started questioning your own reactions.

You may even ask yourself:

Am I expecting too much?
Am I too sensitive?
Why do I feel so alone when I am married?

I know those questions because I have asked them too.

When Love Feels Lonely is for women who want to understand what is happening in their neurodiverse marriage without blaming their husbands—or themselves.

You are not the only one who feels this way

A neurodiverse marriage can be loving, loyal, and stable while still feeling emotionally confusing.

Your husband may care about you very much, but express love differently than you expect. You may keep trying to explain what you need, only to walk away feeling unheard. After years of this, it is easy to begin doubting yourself.

This book helps you make sense of those experiences.

It offers a place to slow down, look honestly at your marriage, and begin separating what belongs to neurodiversity from what belongs to you.

Your feelings matter too.

This is not a book about blaming your husband

Blame rarely creates the closeness we are looking for.

This book is about understanding the patterns that can leave both partners feeling frustrated, misunderstood, and disconnected.

It is also about finding your way back to yourself.

You will learn how to recognize what you are feeling, communicate more clearly, ask for what you need, and decide what meaningful connection looks like in your own marriage.

Inside the book

In When Love Feels Lonely, I share personal experiences, professional insights, reflection questions, and practical tools to help you:

  • understand why emotional loneliness can develop in a neurodiverse marriage
  • stop dismissing or second-guessing your own feelings
  • recognize the difference between intention and impact
  • communicate the strength of a feeling or need more clearly
  • move away from repeated arguments and unsuccessful conversations
  • ask for connection in specific, realistic ways
  • rebuild trust in yourself and your own perceptions

This is not about creating a perfect marriage. It is about creating greater clarity, honesty, and emotional safety.

Who this book is for

This book may speak to you if you:

  • love your husband but often feel alone in the relationship
  • are married to a man who is autistic or has Asperger traits
  • feel exhausted from trying to explain your emotional needs
  • have been told that you are too sensitive, too emotional, or too demanding
  • want practical help without anger, husband-bashing, or false promises
  • are trying to decide what you need in order to feel healthier and more connected

You do not need to have all the answers before reading this book.

You only need to be willing to take your own experience seriously.

Why I wrote it

For years, I personalized many of my husband’s autistic traits.

His silence felt like rejection. His flat tone felt like anger. His difficulty responding emotionally made me feel as though my needs did not matter.

I kept trying harder, explaining more, and hoping that the next conversation would finally be different.

Understanding neurodiversity changed the way I saw my husband, my marriage, and myself. It did not erase every challenge, but it gave us a clearer place to begin.

I wrote When Love Feels Lonely because I wanted other women to have the understanding I needed years ago.

About Sarah Ruggera, LMFT

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Neurodiverse Couples Counselor. I have worked with couples since 1994.

I am also a wife in a neurodiverse marriage.

My work is shaped by both professional training and lived experience. I understand the loneliness, confusion, hope, anger, love, and grief that can exist together in the same relationship.

I also believe that meaningful change becomes possible when both partners are able to understand the marriage more clearly.

An early reader shared

“For the first time, I felt understood.”

That is exactly why I wrote this book.

I want women to feel less alone, more grounded, and better able to trust what they know about their own lives.
