The Vicious Cycle in Neurodiverse Marriages

The Vicious Cycle in Neurodiverse Marriages. How disconnection can follow connection—and what to do about it. In many neurodiverse marriages, a painful pattern often plays out: moments of deep connection are followed by sudden emotional distance. The neurotypical (NT) partner may feel confused and hurt, wondering why warmth and intimacy seem to vanish overnight.

The Vicious Cycle in Neurodiverse Marriages

This cycle is especially common when the autistic (ASD) partner hasn’t had time to recharge. For example, in my own marriage, weekends and vacations often bring us closer. We laugh, share, and feel emotionally attuned. But once the time ends and routine kicks in, my husband—without having had alone time or access to his special interests—shuts down. He’s not angry; he’s simply depleted. And that emotional distancing triggers my need for reassurance and reconnection. Then Cassandra symptoms flare up—I start to feel invisible, emotionally deprived, and unsure of my place in the relationship, even after just having felt close.

The more I pursue closeness, the more he pulls away. That’s the vicious cycle.

Understanding what’s happening helps. He’s not rejecting me—he’s regulating himself. But even knowing that, the disconnect still hurts.

What breaks the cycle for us is using the Check-In Tool from my book The Happy Neurodiverse Marriage. We talk:
“I noticed we felt close last weekend, but now I’m feeling some distance. How are you doing?”
This opens space for him to say, “I’m just drained. I need a little downtime, but I’m still here.”

That short exchange helps us both reset to baseline. No guessing. No resentment. Just honest awareness of our different rhythms.

Connection in a neurodiverse marriage isn’t linear. It ebbs and flows. But with tools, compassion, and shared language, the cycle doesn’t have to spiral into hurt.

Tools and compassion keep the bond strong.
