What ASD Husbands Want

What ASD Husbands Want. What Do ASD Husbands Really Want from Their NT Wives?
By Sarah Ruggera, LMFT • Author of The Happy Neurodiverse Marriage

Many neurotypical (NT) wives come to me asking, “What does my husband want from me?” When your partner is on the autism spectrum (ASD), it can feel like you’re speaking different emotional languages. But what many ASD husbands truly want isn’t complicated—it’s just different from what NT partners often expect.

What ASD Husbands Want

First, they want clarity. Direct communication works best. Unspoken expectations or emotional “hints” often leave them confused or shut down. Saying what you mean—with kindness—goes a long way.

They also want emotional safety, not pressure. Many ASD men feel deeply but struggle to express it in typical ways. Giving them time to process, without demanding immediate emotional reciprocity, creates trust.

Next, they want respect for who they are—not just what they’re not. Their routines, focus, and interests are not quirks to fix, but core to their identity. Celebrate those differences.

They want a partner, not a parent. Sometimes the NT wife ends up managing all the emotional labor, slipping into a caretaker role. But true connection happens when both partners are empowered and seen as equals.

Lastly, they want encouragement. Many feel like they’re failing because they can’t meet invisible emotional benchmarks. Recognizing their efforts—however small—helps them stay engaged and connected.

In my book The Happy Neurodiverse Marriage, I share practical tools to help couples bridge these differences. You don’t have to figure it out alone. You just need the right map.
